It’s common to feel a bit of discomfort when you move into a new home. Not only can the process be stressful (hopefully you had a real estate agent that made it as easy as possible), but you are also now living in a strange place!
My name is Gate Arty, and I run Gate Arty & the Group – Keller Williams. We’ve helped thousands of people buy and sell, and that means we’ve collected more than a few tips to help you through this exciting time!
One of the families I helped had two young children. The kids kept asking, “When are we going back to the green house?” for weeks after the move! It all takes us a little bit of time to feel like our new space has become a true home.
In order to help you, your spouse, and your children acclimate to the change, there are some tried-and-true methods you can do together in order to settle in faster.
1. PAINT A WALL TOGETHER
It might be overwhelming to launch into a huge painting project right when you move in, so just start with an accent wall. Your entry way, kitchen, or bedroom could use a splash of color! Doing this activity as a family will help you feel like this is becoming your own space.
2. FIND PLACES TO DISPLAY YOUR FAVORITE THINGS
We all have items or collections we take a lot of pride in. Whether this is artwork, trophies, or souvenirs from travel, put them on display! They don’t have to stay there forever, but you will start associating the pride and good memories you attach to your favorite things into your home.
3. ADD IN PLANTS (OR EVEN A PET)
Sure, you might not want another chore. But plants are proven to boost your mood, improve the oxygen, and can really beautify your space. Even though it is a big responsibility, a pet can transform a quiet empty home into a fun and exciting place to return to after work. Both of these things require constant care, which will give you a sense of pride and responsibility related to your house.
4. HOST A HOUSEWARMING PARTY
Once you get settled in, don’t forget to celebrate! Inviting over your friends and family for a cocktail hour or backyard BBQ can make all the difference. You can meet the neighbors, give tours, and fill every room with laughter.
5. UPDATE YOUR FURNITURE AND CLOSET
This is a new chapter in your life, so don’t you deserve a new chair or a new outfit? By changing these other things that you wear or use consistently, it will feel more like you have upgraded into something new and exciting.
Buying a house is a big deal. At Gate Arty & the Group, there’s nothing better than checking in with our clients and hearing how happy they are with their new home.
